i arrive in place with a high level of psychic distress
This artwork originates from a performance where I wrapped my body with textiles using a 4-meter-high scaffolded bed and multiple cameras to scan my movements. I hoped to capture pressures I experience caused by constant surveillance, subjugation, and heightened visibility. In making the work I explored the potential of these feelings with larger Black and Brown Muslim communities in America. At the same time, I wanted to offer my keen desires that emerge from being an exotic object. The photograph is collaged with colorful protective plexiglass plates installed within the frame obscuring some of my body and decorative floral motifs native to countries in Africa and South Asia. I also sensed a strong correlation between these floral motifs and under garments predominately manufactured for women by companies like Victoria Secrets.
